Sedation dentistry offers a way to be more relaxed during a dental procedure. For those who have slightly higher anxiety from past experiences at the dentist, sedation may be the right option for you. If you avoid seeing the dentist due to fear, sedation helps to calm your fears and help you feel comfortable.
Sedation can be helpful for other reasons such as having a gag reflex, low pain tolerance, and having a hard time sitting still.
Different types of sedation medications are used. The main types used are inhaled and oral sedation. Inhaled sedation includes the use of nitrous oxide, “laughing gas”. This doesn’t always make you laugh, but definitely helps you relax. This wears off quickly and you are able to drive afterwords. The next level of sedation is oral sedation. You may be given a pill to take an hour before the procedure. This will require having someone drive you to the office.
We will be glad to discuss if Sedation dentistry is right for you.
